Legends circle Watch Master Odin like motes of dust around a forming star. At once impossibly ancient, but with the strength of youth, riddled with scars, but the master of any who confronts him, an aloof leader, yet a true Battle Brother. So long has Odin been Watch Master of the fortress, that none can even say from which of the Space Marine Chapters he originally hailed. Flanked by his two Psyber-Ravens, Huginn and Muninn, one may think Raven Guard, with his ice-blue Bionic eye, a possible Iron Hand; but darker whispers speak of the Horus Heresy and those of the Traitor Legions who chose to stay loyal to the Emperor. The truth may never be known, but Odin wields rumor as a weapon in its own right, baffling foes with his enigmatic nature.
Watch Master Odin's ornate armour dates back to the founding of the Deathwatch itself.
Watch Fortress Asgard is a haven of classical warrior culture, with the Battle Brothers of Kill Team Aesir spending many hours competing in wrestling, fencing and the composing and recitation of poetry. No one Veteran is held in higher esteem than another for any reason other than virtue; the most deadly combatant will find themselves at the lowest social rung if they act aloof or superior. The most successful Veterans, like Thor, Jane Foster and Brunnhilde, are paragons of camaraderie as well as warfare, fighting alongside their Battle Brothers as equals. The philosophies of Kill Team Aesir hold that all are equally valued once donning the intricate shoulder pad of the Deathwatch, from the initiate through to the Vanguard Veterans, each voice is heard, though Watch Master Odin holds veto, as is his right.
The Mighty Thor, the most respected Veteran of the Fortress.
The protection from scrutiny afforded by the Deathwatch armour is a great asset to Kill Team Aesir, who tread a line that may be called Heretical where it done by lesser agents of the Imperium. Many weapons used by the Veterans of Kill Team Aesir are forged by artisans of the Squats or Jokaero, and vehicles have be customised for the varied battlefields of the Sectorum Ludus Bellorum, such as the Land Speeder Bifrost and Aragorn pattern bikes used by the Valkyrior. Although conflicts with Dark Elf Covens and Ur-Ghul Packs are almost inevitable, the lack of resources to be found for Imperial forces to the Galactic East of the Great Rift means that detente with the Eldar or Tau are more common that an Absolutist approach would allow. Perhaps the most dire departure from Deathwatch doctrine ustilised by Kill Team Aesir, however, are the soldiers known as the Einherjar.
When the Great Rift first burst through the galaxy, Watch Fortress Asgard was totally isolated without support and no guarantee that reinforcements were ever to be expected. Pursuing ancient and forbidden lore, Deathwatch Apothecary Freyja came upon a long-lost ritual for preserving the fading vestiges of the life of a Space Marine and the Einherjar were born. The ornately adorned and etched armour of the Einherjar forms a mystical cage which traps part of the Marine's spirit in ceramite and plasteel plate forever, rendering them near-invulnerable automatons. Despite the horror inherent in meddling with the Emperor's work, and the uncanny nature of the silent warriors, the Veterans of Kill Team Aesir have come to appreciate the extra aid that the Einherjar can provide.
Although small, the Garrison of Watch Fortress Asgard is dedicated to defending the Sectorum Ludus Bellorum against dire alien threats, be they the ancient menace of the Necron, rampaging hordes of Orks or skulking packs of Ur-Ghul. The Thin Black Line is now, more than ever, a razor's edge, but the Veterans of the Deathwatch know too well that only in death does duty end.
