The Cult of the Imperial Mutant

Mutation runs rampant through the Imperium, often becoming so established as to form sub-races referred to as "Abhumans" by Xenoligists. More common strains like Ratlings, Ogryn or Squats have become so ubiquitous that they have been folded into Imperial society and are generally accepted by all but the most zealous of Redemptionists. The sub-human pool of mutants known as "Scavvies" and "Scalys", however, remain ostracized and hunted wherever they flourish. Just what denotes a Scavvie (alternatively a Scavy or Scav), is nebulous, with those suffering only from severe skin conditions lumped-in alongside those with mutated limbs and horrendous mandibles. As such, in places where humanity is exposed to a great deal of mutagens, Scavvie populations have grown exponentially; despite open hostility against them and a shortened lifespan. Hive cities, especially, are common breeding grounds.

In the fetid undercity of one of the forgotten hives to be found in Sectorum Ludus Bellorum, happenstance provided for a large Scavvie population, of such a size that the local Arbites and Militia were unsure as to if they could actually be defeated in open conflict. Into this population came two individuals, a holy man and a warrior, the combination of the two may yet prove to change the very destiny of the Sectorum. In this, now lost, hive, it was the habit of rich merchants to hunt, capture, train and battle mutants and scavvies from the underhive in arena combat, some even selectively breeding generations of aberrant creatures to create stronger gladiators. Into this life of carnage was born a particularly massive and savage Scaly who became known as "Hakken-Slash", or, much later, "Spartascav". Hakken was a champion from an early age, tearing opponents apart with a viscous vigor that would delight the crowd and terrify opponents. So great was Hakken's success that his fights became too predictable and fast, losing popularity with both fans a bookies alike. The decision was made to 'retire' Hakken, with a bullet to the skull. His body was dumped in the wastes.

It is noted that the "Scaly" genus of abhuman often possesses the capacity to regenerate from injury, but still, recovering from a round through the brain remains highly unlikely; somehow, Hakken managed it. Reborn from death itself, Hakken was filled with an all-conquering rage and the desire to erase human civilisation from the face of the planet, it is unlikely that any resulting rampage would have been notable, excepting that Hakken encountered another wandering Scavvie, The Keeper, and the pair got to talking.

The Scav that would become known as The Keeper was born human, or at least passably so, and entered a life in the Adeptus Ministorum as a traveling Preacher. Unlike many Ministorum Preachers, this man decided to provide ministration to the wretched and diseased, even mutants when they were suitably passive. Perhaps it was constant proximity to the malformed and diseased, perhaps it was just bad luck, but when the Preacher's skin began to change and his body to warp, he was declared a Scav and sent out into the wastes to die. Instead of dying, the Preacher survived, spending years wandering and meditating before coming to a spiritual epiphany that would shake the foundations of the world. Now calling himself 'The Keeper', the preacher moved from mutant to mutant, spreading a new belief.

The Creed of The Keeper

1. Humanity is ruled and protected by the God-Emperor of Mankind.

2. The Emperor is a Powerful Psyker

3. Pyskers are a form of mutant.

4. The Emperor is a Mutant.

5. Mutants are the chosen of the Emperor

When Hakken encountered The Keeper and his new Creed of Imperial Worship, a dangerous combination was born, and soon the entire planet was caught up in a holy crusade. Despite access to better equipment and the local Planetary Defense Force, the human inhabitants of the Hive City grossly underestimated just how many scavvies they were fighting. The Planetary Governor only escaped with his life due to the last of the PDF selling their lives to keep the space port clear from the wave of rampaging mutants, scalies and scavs. When the Governor and his retinue arrived at the next Imperial system, he was tried and executed for cowardice and a request was sent to the nearest Militarum base for troops to be dispatched to the Hive World as soon as was convenient. Meanwhile, the Cult of the Imperial Mutant grew and built; building a society, building technology and building an army. Soon, the scavs left the Hive World on their great crusade to "free" the mutants of the Galaxy.
